Some background: James A. H. Brownlow was born in 1824 in Pendleton, South Carolina, and died 1900 in Bartow County. His father was John A. Brownlow, who was born in 1797 in Chatham County, Georgia, and died in 1869 in White County, Georgia. John A. Brownlow's father was John Brownlow, who I designate as Plain John.  He was born in 1762 in Armagh, Ulster Province, Ireland and died 12 April 1832 in Pendleton, South Carolina. Plain John’s father was William. Plain John had a brother named James, born 1765.

1790 – Halifax District, North Carolina. In the James Brownlow household there are two men 16 or older (one of them must be him), one “free white female” under 16,  one free white female over 15, 17 other free persons and 21 slaves.  This could be the brother of “plain” John, but he can’t be the same James Brownlow in the 1800 North Carolina census because here he is over 16 and there, 10 years later, he is 16-18. So there are two James Brownlows. This could be a large extended family or a plantation operation with sharecroppers and slaves. This could be “plain” John Brownlow’s brother.

In 1800 – Chatham County, North Carolina. James Brownlow, 16-25, is head of household. There is a female 16-25, and two males and two females under 10.

H. born 1824 and John A. born 1822. Isaac, born 1827, is one of the two males under 5, but the other is unknown.

1830 – Anderson County, South Carolina. James Brownlow, 40-49, is living in a household with a female 40-49, two males 5-9, two males 10-14, and single females under 5, 5-9, and 10-15.
